Crochet Christmas Ornament – Holiday Gleam: Free Pattern

Crochet Christmas Ornament

Crochet Christmas ornaments are a popular item for crocheters to make during the holiday season. This pattern is simple and easy to make. It’s great for beginners who are looking to add a little bit of crochet flair to their holiday decor. Keep reading to learn what materials you will need to create your own Holiday Gleam crochet Christmas ornament.

This is the first pattern I have ever written and I got inspired by other crocheted ornaments I have seen. I decided to try something different than what I have seen from others. Rather than start at the bottom and work in a circular pattern, I decided to make a rectangular panel that cinches at both the bottom and the top. Kind of like one of the techniques you can use to crochet a hat.

About the ornament

This pattern uses a small amount of worsted weight yarn and it makes a great project to use up leftover yarn! I used Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn Metallic. (link to website?)

The ornament pattern uses a one row repeat, which makes it great for beginners. Below you will find my step-by-step instructions on how to create this crochet Christmas ornament.

For this project I decided on half double crochets. They are one of my favorite stitches because they are taller than single crochets, but are still condensed like a single crochet. I decided to add ribbing to the stitch and it gives the perfect amount of texture to the ornaments.

I used 3″ round, plastic ornaments from Michaels. (link to website?) Creating a rectangular panel allowed me to find the right number of rows to fit around the ornament. I recommend you measure your panel as well to account for any yarn or tension differences.

This pattern works up pretty quickly and takes less that one hour to make. I hope this crochet Christmas ornament pattern will help you to brighten up your holiday decor and I hope you enjoy making these as much as I do!

Notes About Pattern

  • This pattern is written in US terms
  • This pattern assumes you already have knowledge of how to make slip knots, chains, slip stitches, and half double crochets and understand back loop only, fastening off, and weaving in ends
  • Chain 2 does not count as stitch
  • Be sure to leave a long enough tail for cinching the ornament and weaving in ends
  • The end tail will need to be woven up the slip stitch row to the opposite side
  • If you use a different size ornament the pattern will most likely be the incorrect size for your ornament. (I have not tried it with different sizes)
  • If you would like to support my business you can purchase this pattern on Etsy. (here?)
  • Comment below if you have any questions about the pattern (I am only able to help with questions about the written pattern. If you deviate from the pattern I may not be able to help)

Knot and weave in end. Cut off extra yarn.

Weave remaining tail up sl st row to the open side of the ornament. (Do not pull tight) Flip inside out and fit over ornament.
